There’s software, and there’s software. There’s coders and there’s coders.
I’ve just had the misfortune to buy a complete piece of junk in the shape of a PHP script.
I’m so annoyed I’ve asked for a refund, which I think I’ve done maybe 4 times ever including this one.
The reason I’m so annoyed is because there’s a guy out there who I respect for what he does, and he’s had a brilliant idea – this is new. The idea is so good I bought resale rights to the script and took out a domain to re-sell it through.
It’s that good an idea, and I wish I’d thought of it myself.
The script though, is pure junk.
After spending 5 or 6 hours trying to get it to work, I took a look at the site I’d bought it from which was supposed to be (or so I thought) an example of the script in action.
When I viewed the source of the page, I found that instead of the site using the script it was selling, it was actually using Sid Hale’s RAPS to accept PayPal payments and do the upsell.
I was both disappointed and angry. Hence the refund request just to express my disapproval really.
(RAPS is great BTW.)
Now if I feel like that, what are other people going to think about it? Not good news at all.
But every cloud has a silver lining, and I’ve been having a chat with David, one of my developers and his reaction was “I’ll do that” and I know he will.
So he’s going to write a usable version of the script some time in the next month or so.
No, I don’t think it’s fair or appropriate to say what it is, but you may realise at some point in the future when I announce it.

Frank, sounds a bit like your trying to justify stealing this guys intellectual property rights. Have you been upfront with him and told him what you are about to do?
If you respect him so much, perhaps you should consider offering him a JV when your script is ready. Only a thought.

Gareth:
There’s no copyright laws on ideas, otherwise there’d only be one telephone company, one motor company, one auction site, one word processor etc.
There wouldn’t be a JV Manager and a Butterfly Marketing Script, there’d just be JV Manager.
And like I always say, there’s nothing new under the sun.
The idea is a good one, and it’s new but not totally original (nothing ever really is), just a variation on existing techniques.
I expect a series of clones of it, just like there is with anything.
In fact, the nickel script I’ve been using and that’s under development by one of my developers is not a new idea. But it’s an absolutely brilliant implementation.
Wait until you see it.
And when you see my implementation of the script at issue you’ll be blown away or I’ll eat my hat if I had one.

Frank,
come on, do a fellow Brit a favour: name your price now for this to be developed script, plus the nickel sale script and I’ll send the money over right now. I’ll add in the price of the pro helpdesk too.
I don’t mind waiting for the software – I don’t even mind the fact I don’t know what it is yet.
You look about my age, so probably old enough to remember “lucky bags”.
Why not make it a lucky bag of products for $X? I’ll be happy to buy the first one.
There’s only one other marketer I’d buy from like that.
What do you think – interesting marketing idea?
Amin:
I’m not feeling too well at the moment (sore throat, headache, shivery), but your comment has really brightened up my day, thank you. 🙂
That’s a very nice marketing idea.
Here’s the funny thing. I do have a “bag” of small Windows applications I was intending to release one at a time.
Maybe I *will* do a lucky bag. I like that.
I tell you what. I’ll put the Windows applications together and send you a copy.
They’re only tiny little tools, but very useful in different circumstances. Keyword Inspector was one of them (I have an update for that now), and the others are in a similar vein, but do different things.
As for bundling scripts, yes I definitely intend to do that when I have a few more. Maybe when I have a decent amount of scripts completed I’ll sell the lot as a special bundle at a reduced price.
A bit like some other marketers I know.
But I reckon you’ll have grabbed them all in nickel sales long before then. 😉
And going back to the script this post is all about, this evening I had a great idea to make it even better. A really nice twist to it that will turn it into a fabulous list builder.
You’re going to like it when I release it, I guarantee it. But I’ll probably want to do a month of testing first.

lol. Winter blues – you must live in the North of England!
I think you’re right – I probably won’t wait until you do your special bundle – I’ll grab them as they come out.
Hope you feel better soon!
