Just a quick reminder – I did a survey in November 2007 and asked a few questions. Part of it was to rank certain areas in order of importance from 1 being most important to 8 being least important.
Rather than give you the results in the order I asked for them, I’m giving you them in what I believe you told me was the order of importance to you. Okay, I have a slight bias too…
So the first one was about list building and is at:-
http://www.frankhaywood.com/list-building-survey-results-part-1/
This one is all about product creation. Here’s the result:-
As you can see, product creation is fairly important to many people, and from what I’ve been told by people outside the survey (maybe I should run another one to make sure) is that it’s something that a lot of people have a problem with.
Well, here on this blog I’ve shown that it’s possible to create a product in just a day. It’s also possible to create the product, put the sales page up, set up an autoresponder and send some traffic there in the same day. It’s hard work, but I know it can be done because I’ve done it.
So what is it that people find so hard about product creation?
You know what I think?
I think it’s because people have to actually sit down and do something.
I believe the thought to some people of actually creating something is enough to put them off. I believe that because I’ve thought that way too (and still do occasionally).
After all it’s a big deal creating a product isn’t it? You have to be really clever don’t you?
Only if you think so…
Nope, I don’t believe it, I believe the main things that hold you and me up is procrastination caused by the fear of failing. Yeah I get it too, but while it may slow me down from time to time, I don’t let it stop me.
When you stop to think about it, actually creating the product (whatever it is) isn’t that hard really is it? You just have to make the time to do it. But then once it’s done, you have to market it and sell it too, and I believe that’s the really big scary thing for most people.
What if it doesn’t sell? What if I can’t get any traffic? What if I can’t get any JV partners or affiliates? What if…
You can “what if” yourself out of anything, and I reckon this is why many people don’t actually go on to create any products at all.
Because once you’ve created the product, you have no excuse to do the other things that are related to it. And one of those might be where you fail.
Is that you?
I’ve said it before, there’s nothing stopping you from having a profitable internet business other than you.
To get past this it means you might have to go outside your comfort zone. Many successful people are no cleverer than you or me. In fact a lot of geniuses have died paupers, so intelligence has nothing to do with it.
All you have to do is believe you can be a success, decide what you’re going to do and then go for it. And the easiest thing to do is to create a product. Worry about the rest later if you must worry at all.
If you don’t believe me, or you can’t see how or what to do, or you just can’t get started, then please leave a comment telling me what you think the problem is, and I’ll see if I can’t do something to help you.

Hi Frank,
I think that somewhere in there there’s a feeling that the product just isn’t going to hit the right mark. I go through this myself.
1. Is this product the right one.
2. What should I put in it.
3. Have I gone overboards. (remember that too big a product takes an inordinate amount of time to create)
etc etc
and you’re right, it is a form of procrastination. I guess if you don’t give it your best shot, then you are not going to get off the starting blocks.
Inertia.. kill it stone dead:-)
Great post Frank.
I’m currently taking the leap into product creation. I actually really like coming up with new ideas but I find if I sit on them too long, self-doubt creeps in and I end up doing nothing with them.
Fear of failure really is a big issue. What I keep telling myself is no one else really cares whether I fail or succeed, so why not just go for it. Carpe Diem and all that!
Cheers…Graham
“I believe the main things that hold you and me up is procrastination caused by the fear of failing”
Ain’t it da truth, ain’t it da truth – as the lion said in Wizard of Oz.
You’re point about all the ‘what ifs’ is a very good one. That internal dialogue goes on for so many people.
Here’s a little trick to deal with those questions: just add one word to the question to put the whole thing in perspective.
Examples:
What if it doesn’t sell?
So what, if it doesn’t sell.
What if I can’t get any traffic?
So what, if you can’t get any traffic.
So what? Who’s dying if you can’t [fill in your own fear here]?
So what if you fail? You’ve just learned something.
So what is a great question to use.
You can also try this:
What if you succeed?
What if you get a lot of traffic?
What if your product takes off?
“In fact a lot of geniuses have died paupers, so intelligence has nothing to do with it.”
Very true, Frank. And I’ve known millionaires who were unhappy and poor people who were content. It’s not all about the money, but it is about reaching your own potential – whatever that may be.
Hi Frank!
You’re right – again.
I’ve created a product, and would like to to comment.
All the best,
Jan
I have been paying attention lately to any quality information that has to do with product creation. I too am in the process of releasing my first ebook that will cover a lot of these things you have mentioned here, Frank. Issues like procrastination, self-doubt, fear of failing etc.
I would actually love if you could provide a testimonial for me.
But back to your blog topic these are all areas that I struggled to discipline myself with, but once one is able to short off all distractions, such as watching TV, checking emails periodically, posting on forums…and just focus on whatever goals you want to achieve, I agree the sky is the limit.
If anyone would like a review copy to provide me a testimonial please send me an email here:
